Types Of Assistance

To determine what funding or resources may be available for personal assistance and other supports be prepared to discuss areas where assistance is needed. Consider how much time you will want or need a person to provide assistance (e.g., during the day, in the evening, overnight). A completed worksheet can be used as a starting point for a discussion with a community service professional about your preferences and needs for support.

In order for you to be successful in your own home or within your family home, you must carefully consider how much and what type of assistance will be needed. The following worksheet may be useful in summarizing those things you can do on your own and those areas where you will need assistance.

Planning for Assistance Worksheet You can print out this worksheet to help you plan for the supports you need to live comfortably in your own home. Review each potential support area (e.g., food shopping, cooking) and place a mark in the column which best describes the support you need. Community service agencies typically assist in the following areas:

  • Employment and Education
  • Volunteer Opportunities
  • Financial
  • Clothing and Furniture
  • Food and Nutrition
  • Home Health Care / Personal Assistants
  • Care of the Home
  • Transportation
  • Social / Recreational Activities

The availability of services often varies significantly across communities. To begin to determine what is available in your community, work with your teacher to identify local organizations serving people with disabilities. These local organizations are often a good source of information because of their role in coordinating services. Contacting the Mayor's office, visiting the public library and reviewing the telephone book may identify other local resources. The Indiana State Department of Health also keeps a comprehensive listing of community services. You can call the Family Help Line at 800-433-0746 or 317-233-1325.
